TRAILS and STEPS fun day!

Today (12/18/14) we traveled over to the MS to visit our friends in the STEPS program.  We had a great afternoon of movie watching and snacking.  This morning, the students in the TRAILS program made "Reindeer Chow" to bring to our little party.  The kids has a great time visiting with their friends and I loved seeing my "old dogs" in the STEPS program!

Here is the Reindeer Chow recipe:

Flat Stanley

This school year, we have been reading and learning about Flat Stanley and all his different adventures.  At the end of last school year, I made a Flat Stanley for my brother-in-law, who is a Chemistry Professor at The University of Iowa.  At least once a year, my brother-in-law (Scott) goes out to Stanford University in CA to do research.  When he went to Stanford this past summer, he took his Flat Stanley with him and taught him all about Chemistry and the equipment/machines his team uses for their research.

Here is the link to the Daly Research Group website (look under the Outreach heading).  You can see Stanley's Chemistry adventures!!

Goldie's visit

Today (11/24/14) Glen and Goldie the dog came to visit CCIS.  Glen and Goldie have been to CCIS many time in the past.  Glen talked to the students about what he and Goldie do and why it is important.  The students were able to ask questions, and there were some great questions today!  It was great to see Goldie in action and know she is keeping our schools safe!

Pumpkins

The students in the TRAILS program have been learning all about pumpkins.  To wrap up the pumpkin unit, the kids did an experiment with candy pumpkins and different liquids.  We wanted to see which liquid would make the candy pumpkins dissolve or change the fastest and slowest.
The students had to make a smart guess on which liquid they thought would be fastest (written in brown marker) and which liquid would be slowest (blue marker).  The liquids used were: cooking oil, vinegar, Sprite, water, and milk.  One cup of each liquid was used.  The candy pumpkins were dropped in the different liquids and we waited for about 25 minutes before taking them out.
The results were very surprising!  We found the candy pumpkin in the water was the most changed and the candy pumpkin in the cooking oil had the smallest change.

Brookfield Zoo

Today (11/4/14) was our trip to the Brookfield Zoo.  The sky was cloudy and the air was a little chilly, but it was a rain-free day!  The zoo was the most empty I've ever seen it....it was kind of nice, because we were able to see the animals really well.  We all had a great time visiting the animals and enjoying the fresh air!
